Telangana Forensic Science Laboratory to Establish State-of-the-Art DNA & Molecular Biology Laboratory for Enhanced Criminal Investigations

The Telangana Forensic Science Laboratory is set to enhance its capabilities with the approval of Rs. 17.50 crore by the State government for the construction of a new DNA & Molecular Biology Laboratory. The three-story building, spanning an area of 14,000 square feet, will be equipped with cutting-edge technology to aid the police in solving complex and high-profile cases.

During the foundation stone-laying ceremony near the Nampally police station, Home Minister Mohammed Mahmood Ali emphasized the vital role of forensic science and technology in connecting criminals to their crimes. He highlighted the significance of forensic evidence in securing convictions and delivering justice to victims. The construction of the new facility is expected to be completed within eight months.

The workload of the Telangana Forensic Science Laboratory is substantial, with an average of 10,000 cases received annually. In some instances, the laboratory receives over 20 articles for examination, underscoring the need for an enhanced facility to meet the growing demand.

The forthcoming DNA and Molecular Biology Laboratory will primarily focus on examining cases related to bodily offenses, including crimes against women and children. Bisht expressed gratitude to the city police for their collaboration in the modernization of the FSL.

Abilasha Bisht, the Director of Forensic Science, stated, “The new laboratory will be equipped with the latest technology and equipment to assist scientists in aiding investigating officers in solving cases.” This development will significantly enhance the capabilities of forensic experts in the state.

Commissioner Anjani Kumar of the Hyderabad Police Commissionerate highlighted the importance of DNA profiling, stating that it enables the establishment of a criminal’s presence at the crime scene regardless of their location within the country. This highlights the critical role of the DNA library in facilitating criminal investigations.

Shikha Goel, Additional Commissioner (Crimes) of the Hyderabad Police, commended the successful collection of scientific evidence in high-profile cases. The collaborative efforts between the police and FSL officers have ensured that the guilty are brought to justice in such cases.

The modernization and construction of the new DNA & Molecular Biology Laboratory underscore Telangana State Forensic Laboratory’s commitment to utilizing advanced forensic technologies to facilitate accurate and efficient investigations. The facility will play a crucial role in supporting law enforcement agencies, enhancing public safety, and upholding justice in the state.
